De Hems

De Hems is a great Dutch Pub in Soho, selling a huge range of beers, including Strawberry Beer on Tap. The building is old and characteristic, upstairs has sofa chairs and tables. It gets pretty busy so arrive early for a seat.
The staff are very friendly, talkative, and will happily make drink suggestions. They also do cocktails!

However with the huge range of beers on offer you may need to check which ones are vegan, and bar staff may not know this. Luckily Dutch (and German) beers are more commonly vegan than those of other countries.

Walk from Leicester Square Station, just off Shaftesbury Avenue and Chinatown.

Mon – Thurs – 10:00 ~ 00:00
Fri – Sat – 10:00 ~ 00:30
Sun – 10:00 ~ 11:00

Waxy O’Connor’s

Waxy O’Connor’s is a great Irish Pub right in the center of London, just near Leicester Square. It’s a pretty big pub with 4 different bars and 6 levels, connected by a maze of staircases and passages. The interior is all wood with a large tree being the focus of the design.

It has a great atmosphere and gets quite busy, sometimes with live Irish music or showing football matches. It’s not cheap compared to nearby pubs, but the vibe and design make it worthwhile. Go early to avoid long queues and get a table.

The main entrance is on Rupert Street, but there is a smaller entrance/exit on Wardour Street too. Walk from Piccadilly Circus or Leicester Square Station.

Mon – Wed – 12:00 ~ 23:00
Thurs – 12:00 ~ 23:30
Fri – Sat – 12:00 ~ 00:00

Vital Ingredient

Vital Ingredient is a Salad, Soup & Juice bar with several branches around London. While they are not exclusively vegetarian, you can pick exactly what you want, and some of the combos are specificially vegan.

Basically you pick your base (lettuce, rice, pasta or Quinoa!!) then your salad ingredients and sauces, around £6. They also have vegan soups and ramen! This place gets very busy at lunch but the line moves fast.

Find other branches here.

Maoz – CLOSED

Sadly closed :(

It might be an odd thing to say as a Vegan, but I was never a big fan of Falafel. Or hummus… That is, until I went to Maoz. This place instantly turned me, and I am now addicted. For under £6 you get 5 Falafel balls in either a Pita Pocket or a Salad Box (great gluten-free option), hummus, deep fried aubergine, full run at the salad bar, and a drink! They also make fresh lemon juice daily.

Seriously, I love this place. If I’m buying Lunch in Soho, 3/5 times its from here. Its very filling, very tasty, and mostly healthy. Its 90% Vegan, as they do sell Feta cheese and Egg options, the Coleslaw is also not Vegan. Supposedly everything tastes better deep fried, and their deep fried cauliflower proves it, and their chips are pretty good too.

I have brought many omnivores to this place and they all love it. Maoz also has branches in Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, New York and other locations in the USA.

They are open late every night, till about 2am, so they are a great place to eat if you’ve been out on the town!

Seriously, it may be “just” a falafel bar, but its one of my favourite places to eat in London. On Old Compton street in Soho, close to Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square.

Vitao – CLOSED

Sadly Vitao is now closed. Please try out Vantra.

Vitao as another favourite of mine in Soho. Formerly known as Vita Organic, it’s a fully Vegan, Organic, mostly Gluten-Free, mostly Asian Buffet. Its a really relaxed atmosphere in here, chilled music, and great in summer with the windows open. You can buy a £6 takeaway box for lunch, or sit in for all you can eat! They also sell shakes, juices, natural soft drinks and desserts.

Its a really nice place to hang out, but they have a “time limit” on the buffet at night so you can’t spend hours there. I’m not sure if they actually enforce that though. There is also now their sister cafe, Vantra.

Vitao is also popular with my omnivorous friends and they ask to go back there! Go to Oxford Circus or Piccadilly Circus and Walk down Wardour Street from Oxford Street or Up Wardour Street from Shaftesbury Avenue.

London West End Theatre

At any one time, there must be 50-100+ shows on in the West End of London, and at least 10+ of those will be great! Like Broadway, New York, seeing a show in London’s West End should be on your list of things to do.

The best way to go about this is by heading to Leicester Square and picking up a few pamphlets and show lists to decide on what you want to see first, then go to one of the theatre booking agents to try your luck.

If its a brand new, popular show, you probably won’t be able to get tickets from any of these guys, and your best trying to book with the theatre directly. Actually, you should always try the theatre directly to see what they have, and then go to one of the agents for comparison.

There are loads of these Box Office stands in Leicester Square. Tickets and prices can vary from agent to agent, but I prefer London Theatre Bookings. They are the biggest independent agent, seem more professional than some of the others, and I have never had a problem with tickets I bought through them. They are honest with their advice and have theatre seating maps to show you exactly what you are buying.

Weekday Matinée sessions are usually the cheapest for all shows, and you can try your luck with same-day tickets for last minute seats.

As for the shows themselves, it depends on what you are looking for. The Lion King is simply amazing, with intricate costumes, puppets, your favourite songs and characters from the film, and pretty much the entire story is covered. If you liked the film (and you should!!) you will love this show.

We Will Rock You was a little disappointing. The Mad Max-esque story line is terrible and barely threads the songs together. Personally I would have preferred a sort of epic tribute act. The entire cast finally does “We Will Rock You” at the end, and its great! But they should have just done that for all the big hits and it would have been much better.

London Theatre Bookings have a booth at the East end of Leicester Square (near the Tube Station), Covent Garden Tube Station, and now at Piccadilly Circus, or you can book online.

Most of the shows are in theatres between Regent Street and Covent Garden, but the odd show will be further out. Ask the agent for the location of the theatre when booking.

Beatroot Cafe

Beatroot is a friendly Vegetarian Cafe in Soho.  About 90% Vegan, they offer a buffet selection of hot and cold foods, juices and smoothies and desserts. (The Vegan Shepherds Pie is my fave). You start with a small, medium or large box, and select as many options as you can fit! The food is good, service is quick and friendly, and the prices are reasonable (£5.20 for a medium which is quite filling). There are a few tables inside and out if you want to sit in, and its a nice bright setting, but most customers are there for takeaway.

Mon – Fri – 9:00 ~ 21:00
