Where do you want to go?

Shakahari

Shakahari (meaning ‘vegetarian’ in Hindi) offers fresh, tasty and well presented vegetarian dishes, with some vegan and gluten-free options too. The menu changes quarterly based on season, so that only freshly available ingredients are used. The restaurant is not huge but enough space for a group if you book ahead, it does fill up.

Staff were friendly, the ambiance is nice and everyone there seemed to be enjoying themselves, and the food!

Slightly more expensive than other places with entrees and desserts around AU$15 and mains at AU$22, but reasonable for the quality of food. Portions are not huge but not tiny either.

Nostralis

Nostralis has a good reputation for their veggie pizza in Melbourne. But to be honest, we weren’t that impressed. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t great, and adding $5 to a medium pizza for vegan cheese + gluten free option ($2.50 each) it just didn’t seem worth it. A bit out of the way to get to also, maybe try delivery or Mr Natural.

Tues – Sun 17:30 ~ 22:00

Radhey

Radhey Chai Bar is a cute little coffee shop with vegan snacks, salads, burgers, a few main meals, cupcakes and drinks (They have gluten free options too). Friendly staff run the shop that sits about 10-15 people inside for a cosy break. Great for a cofee, tea, having a chat or escaping the cold in winter.

Open daily 12:00 ~ 21:00

Mr Natural (Pizzas)

Mr Natural has been serving veggie pizza to Melbournites since 1985! We didn’t get to try them but will definitely on next visit to Melbourne. They have a branch in both Fitzroy & St. Kilda. Let us know what you think!

Fina’s 2 Vietnamese

Head to Fina’s for your Vietnamese kick, including noodles, stir fry and of course vegan pho! The cafe also sells juices, smoothies, and alcoholic beverages including vegan wine and beers, and cakes! The cakes are actually what stopped us when walking past, very well presented and quite tasty, if not maybe a little too sweet (like many vegan cakes), they had gluten free offerings too. The menu has icons indicating if the dish is vegan or not.

Open daily 08:30 ~ 21:30

Lord of the Fries

Fancy some vegan fast food? Late night burger? Morning fries and an Oreo Shake? Head to Lord of the Fries! It’s not exactly the healthiest food around, (its actually a bit like a veggie McDonalds), but its tasty! They have various fries to try, (shoestring, sweet potato, chunky etc) and sauces based on countries. Not everything is vegan but is well labeled to help you choose.
The choc PB shake is a bit like drinking liquid peanut butter, but the fries are good and a bunch of combos to change things up.

Vegie Bar

Vegiebar is one of the most well known veggie places in Fitzroy (and Melbourne) and is very popular, so getting a table can be tricky at times. They do have a long communal table which can be fun too. We had the vegan nachos (with cheezly!) and the baked field mushroom, both of which are awesome. The portions are decent and very filling, in fact people were struggling to finish their meals, including us. They also have cakes and a juice bar. You simply have to visit this place if you are in Melbourne!

The Organic Food & Wine Deli

The Organic Food and Wine Deli, (TOFWD for short), is a small cafe, deli and shop serving organic food and products with emphasis on local farms, fair trade, cruelty free and environmentally friendly sources. Options include pies, salads, sandwiches, cakes, muffins and more, with gluten free and vegan options. Great for breakfast or a snack, or get a couple of pieces for a full meal. Not much room to eat in so better for takeaway, staff are friendly and helpful.
